For Friday Movie Night last week we watched Kiki’s Delivery Service, an anime made in 1989 about a young witch who goes out on her own to develop her craft. There was a scene in the movie, where Tombo, the sweet boy who is completely smitten with her, asks her to join him and his friends on an adventure to which she replies (from about 100 feet away) “No thanks I don’t want to!” and she decisively and quietly walks away. I blurted out “It’s me.” And my husband immediately says “No Shit.” We had a really good deep belly laugh over that.

At a later point, Kiki loses her ability to fly. During that time she gets a visit from an artist she had met deep in the woods. The artist shares that sometimes she can’t paint, and when that happens she takes a break.

Then stop trying. Take long walks, look at the landscape, doze off at noon, don’t even think about flying. And then you’ll be flying again! ”
