Monochrome: A Practice for Real Life
If you know me, you already know what I wear has historically been all one color. As I was exploring “the why” in all of this, I had a realization. I dive DEEP into the overwhelm to cultivate simplicity. This tendency hasn’t stopped me from bringing in imperfect pieces either. Missing buttons, holes, super pilled, slightly stiff from years of dry cleaning. I’m like a foster parent for quality clothing that has clearly been loved. This is the part of me that enjoys when things are a bit complicated or even painful.
This week I wanted to talk about how dressing in monochrome is trending. It seems that the type of clothing I’m drawn to is less of a trend and more of a way of living. You don’t need to go out and buy all new clothing. You can dress in monochrome with what you already have and this is a trend I can get behind. Shop with me, and I almost might talk you OUT of buying something. That’s sort of the vibe I’m going for here.
After many years of dressing in monochrome, my color palette has organically been evolving because I’m falling in love with pieces for their construction and material. My daughter said to me this morning I looked like a French fashion designer, which made me laugh. I am not wearing all black today. I got dressed in the dark and reached for what I knew felt good.
My drop this week is in honor of the seasons of life where I’ve dressed in all black or all white. As I dip my toe into expressing myself through what I’m wearing, I have started to do so in ways that feel authentic to me. I’m introducing colorful socks or a bright shirt hiding under something neutral. It’s a bit of a whisper, understated, that’s how I like it.

I’ve often thought of myself as a minimalist and I think this ties into dressing in monochrome. I used to be so practical that it almost became impractical (like my dad skiing in a leather jacket and jeans or me wearing Chelsea boots to the beach.) I’ll have to dig into that another time…
